homeroom on 40th street, oakland

Nick has an awesome habit of planning dates for us, but never letting me in on the plan so I can be surprised (no matter how much I beg him to tell me where we’re going/what we’re doing). Last Thursday, he took me to Homeroom on 40th street in Oakland. Super cute, cozy restaurant adorned with white christmas lights with some suhweet indie music playing. We were seated right away next to an entire chalkboard wall. And we grubbed nom nom nom. We ordered 2 different mac n’ cheese plates: Mac the Goat had sliced scallions and breadcrumbs with drizzled olive oil while Gilroy Mac was made from gouda, sharp pecorino, and roasted garlic (and we added hot dogs to ours). We also ordered a side of roasted brussel sprouts mixed with bacon bits and topped with apple cider vinegar, and ended the meal with a caramel brownie sundae. Those 2 mac n’ cheese plates were super filling, and we would’ve been fine sharing just one plate. As a result of the food coma that followed, the rest of the evening’s plans to go out were canceled and we spent the rest of the night in bed watching movies.

they serve their drinks in jars (I got the cider on the right, Nick got a half beer half cider thingy)
